What is Let it rain?

"Let it Rain" is a project focusing on how climate change is affecting Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, where extreme weather episodes often cause floods and disasters in agriculture, the largest economic sector.

In order to support the Agriculture Government Department, we have studied the main climate features in crop production, such as rainfall, temperature, and solar radiation. Our goal was to analyze these events using a dataset from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) over the last 40 years.

Thanks to the data analysis, we were able to identify the frequency and seasonality of heavy rainfall. This way, we have achieved the ability to forecast and create a system that combines the most important features for food production (moderate rain, warm temperatures, and high solar radiation). It provides us with great data visualization showing the days and periods that match these desirable conditions, through detailed crop planning in a heatmap, supporting farmers for the harvest.

Lastly, we wanted to take advantage of our system to support environmental sustainability. We delved into the dry seasons and similarly studied the optimal and most efficient periods for solar energy production.
